Ninth European Space Weather Week
November 5 - 9, 2012, Brussels, Belgium

Splinter - European Space Weather Business Group
M. Wik (NeuroSpace) and D. Heynderickx (DH Consultancy)
Thursday, Nov 8, 14:00-16:00

Over the past few years, several small business initiatives have been set up that provide services for space weather application development and operation. Small companies can offer rapid and flexible solutions with low overheads. In order to maximise this potential to the benefit of the players involved as well as of their customers, we feel that the time is ripe to set up a framework through which small companies can present themselves in a more uniform manner and exchange information, knowledge and resources.

Start-up companies as well as more established entities are faced with issues such as:
  • legal aspects of business operation with larger companies and entities such as ESA or the EU, ranging from handling of contracts to establishing Service Level Agreements and IPR issues,
  • administrative overheads,
  • costs and overheads associated with setting up and maintaining IT platforms and applications,
  • advertising and business practices.
This first meeting would serve to test the water and gather ideas and suggestions. We welcome participants from all types of space weather actors, e.g. consultants, SMEs and larger companies, regional and national institutions and funding bodies, supra-national organisations like ESA and the EU.
