CmPA Seminar: Satellite Observations of Lightning Generated EM Waves in the Thermosphere and Ionosphere

Title: Satellite Observations of Lightning Generated EM Waves in the Thermosphere and Ionosphere

This seminar is organised by KU Leuven's Center for mathematical Plasma-Astrophysics (CmPA).

Speaker: Charlie Bennet

Abstract: Measurements of the electric and magnetic field variations by instruments on the Van Allen probe satellites from the end-of-life period of the Radiation Belt Storm Probe mission are examined. Evidence is presented for a globally distributed, persistent population of Slow Magnetosonic waves that has not previously been discussed in publications. Evidence is also presented for the presence of Plasma Bubble Waveguides that “duct” Lightning Generated waves into the lower ionosphere.

The seminar will be held on Thursday, September 29 at 14:00 in a hybrid mode, in person in building 200B, room 00.07 and transmitted online using the following permanent Blackboard Collaborate link, that can be used for all the upcoming seminars in this academic year:
