Title: Uncovering chromospheric secrets with forward modelling
Abstract:
The solar chromosphere is a key layer to understand the transport of energy and mass throughout the solar atmosphere. However, its fine scales and violent dynamics are challenging to model. State-of-the-art observations show us the chromosphere in unprecedented detail, but at the same time become increasingly complex to interpret. At high resolution, spectral lines break down into a myriad of complex and unfamiliar shapes, to which traditional spectroscopic techniques can no longer be applied. Forward modelling uses synthetic spectra from self-consistent 3D rMHD simulations to understand how spectra form. In this seminar, I will argue how it can be used to bear on this problem and help explain the complex dynamics of the chromosphere. I will review earlier results and list the current challenges and approaches we are currently working on. These include developments in 3D non-LTE spectral synthesis and new approaches to extract information from complex spectral profiles.
