STCE seminar about the Dutch Open Telescope

Title: High resolution solar telescopes: the Dutch Open Telescope and beyond.

by Felix Bettonvil, University Leiden

Abstract: Optical high-resolution solar telescopes are the working horses for obtaining detailed insight into the physics of our Sun. The technology behind them is in several aspects different from their night time counter parts. One of them is the innovative Dutch Open Telescope (DOT, located on Roque de los Muchachos Observatory at La Palma. With its main mirror of 45 centimeters, it reaches 0.2 arcsec spatial resolution for sustained periods over up to a several arc-minute field of view. The open design, allowing for free air flow, was an innovative step forward, and different from the up till then vacuum-based solar telescopes. It paved the way for bigger solar telescopes. In this seminar I will present the history, design considerations and status of the DOT, as well as the NSO Inouye Solar Telescope and European Solar Telescope.
