STCE Seminar: Stratospheric Ozone

STCE visitor Carlo Arosio from the University of Bremen will present a seminar on stratospheric ozone on May 14 at 2PM.

Speaker: Carlo Arosio, Université de Bremen

Title: Stratospheric ozone: retrieval, merging and analysis of satellite limb observations

Abstract:

Satellite limb observations provide the vertical distribution of atmospheric constituents with global coverage. At the University of Bremen an algorithm was developed for the retrieval of stratospheric ozone from SCIAMACHY (2002-2012) limb measurements and was adapted to OMPS-LP (2012-present) observations, which is the focus of this presentation. Retrieved ozone profiles from OMPS were validated using independent observations, such as MLS profiles and collocated ozonesondes. Exploiting the high spatial resolution of the obtained data sets, the merging of SCIAMACHY and OMPS-LP time series was performed, obtaining a monthly latitude- and longitude-resolved time series of ozone profiles, spanning more than 20 years. We then used this merged data set to study long-term ozone changes: a multi-linear regression model was applied over the 2003-2023 period. We explore zonally averaged and longitudinally resolved trends, comparing the results with a chemistry transport model, with a focus on a zonal asymmetry detected at northern high-latitudes.
