Stakeholder Discussion on Protecting Satellite by Modelling High Energy Charged Particles
R. Horne (British Antarctic Survey, UK), N. Crosby (BIRA-IASB), S. Benck (UCL), J. Cabrera (CSR)
Thursday, Dec 1, 14:00-16:00

High energy particles in the Earth's radiation belts, from the Sun, and from cosmic rays pose a threat to satellites and other space vehicles. These particles can damage electronic components leading to loss of service and in some cases total loss. The first objective of this splinter meeting is to bring together scientists and stakeholders such as space agencies, satellite operators, satellite designers, and space insurance companies to identify the problems and discuss user needs in relation to increasing solar activity. The second objective is to discuss how we can improve radiation belt models and forecasting capabilities, whether we can predict an extreme particle event, and where we need to target European scientific research for best results.
