Title: COCONUT -A modern coronal model for space-weather previsions
Speaker: Barbara Perri (KU Leuven, CmPA)
Abstract
Space weather aims at understanding and anticipating the impact of our star on our planet. Emphasis is put on extreme eruptive events such as solar energetic particles or coronal mass ejections, that can reach the Earth in respectively 10 minutes and a couple of days, and may cause massive damages on communications, satellites and human health. But in the 150 millions kilometres that separate the Sun from the Earth, a lot can happen, making it especially challenging to predict the geo-effectiveness of such events.
To enter the era of daily previsions, we need numerical frameworks that can tackle the issue of combining accuracy, speed and physics. EUHFORIA 2.0 is a chain of data-driven codes, coupled together to cover the full Sun-Earth axis. A critical point fo focus on is the beginning of the chain, as it will be the origin of most of the magnetic and thermodynamic structures of the heliosphere. To improve this link, we have developed a new coronal model called COCONUT, which solves the MHD equations with an implicit formulation and unstructured mesh.
