ESA Academy set up a pilot edition of a Space Weather Training Course to be held from 8 to 12 May 2023 at ESA Academy's Training and Learning Facility in ESEC-Galacia, Belgium.
The STCE Space Weather Education Centre will present the lecture 'From Physics to Forecasting' on Monday May 8.
Lecture: From Physics to Forecasting
A space weather bulletin is being made each day at 12:30 UT by a space weather forecaster. The bulletin describes the state of the Earth’s magnetosphere and atmosphere as it is impacted by solar weather and gives a prevision of the next 24 hours. Solar weather is defined by the variations in the solar electromagnetic radiation, the solar wind and solar energetic particle precipitation. The forecaster on duty analyses and interprets solar, heliospheric and geo-data obtained from observations, measurements, models, statistics and classification methods. When the situation requires, warnings are being sent. The lecture will describe the sorts of solar events, how they are monitored and the methods to forecast solar events and geo-impacts
The STCE provides services for civil aviation as space weather can induce Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positional errors and HF communication disturbances and radiation at flight altitude. When the impact exceeds a defined threshold, advisories are being sent. During the lecture the parameters used to describe space weather impacts in GNSS, HF com and radiation at flight altitude will be discussed.
