STCE seminar: Cross-scale characteristics of decayless waves in the solar corona

We welcome our STCE visitor Arpit Shrivastav from the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, India. Arpit just finished his PhD. He uses data from EUI, an EUV imager onboard of Solar Orbiter. He has a recent research paper together with David Berghmans, Andrei Zhukov and Cis Verbeeck, STCE colleagues: https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2024A%26A...685A..36S/abstract

He will talk about his research:

Title: Cross-scale characteristics of decayless waves in the solar corona

Abstract: Decayless kink waves are omnipresent in the active region loops and a viable candidate for coronal heating. Though there have been extensive studies of decayless waves in coronal loops with a few hundred Mm lengths, the properties of these waves in small-scale loops have not been explored widely. Using observations with a pixel scale of 200 km from the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) onboard Solar Orbiter, we identified 42 decayless waves in short coronal loops rooted in the quiet Sun and coronal holes. Unlike previously studied large active region loops, we discover no correlation between loop length and the periods of decayless waves in these shorter loops. The wave modes of decayless waves in short loops remain uncertain, with the standing waves as one possibility. The energy flux of these waves is insufficient to counterbalance the energy losses in the quiet Sun and coronal holes. We find similar behaviours of these waves in active region short loops. The properties of these waves in different coronal regions also provide insights into their possible driving mechanisms. Magnetic field estimations using coronal seismology suggest that the technique may not be applicable universally as the driving mechanism can influence the period of oscillations in short loops.
