Title: Variations in Energy Transport during Flares
Speaker: Rachel Hubbard, Mullard Space Science Laboratory
Solar Orbiter major flare campaigns provide, for the first time, high-resolution unsaturated EUV imaging (EUI) together with X-ray spectroscopic imaging (STIX). Fine structures in flare ribbons are observed on previously inaccessible scales (0.1Mm on 2s cadence), and provide an opportunity to test the standard idea of non-thermal electron beams driving energy transport in flares. We studied a flare in which riblets (extended EUV ribbon fine structures typically observed near the solar limb) were observed. We found some co-spatial and co-temporal emission between the EUV riblets and non-thermal X-rays. We find the average velocity of the observed riblets is 36km/s, downwards. We then consider four possible mechanisms for producing the observed riblet emission, and find 'chromospheric condensation' to be the most consistent with observations.
