Seminar: O+ and H+ transport in Earth’s magnetosphere for solar cycle 23 and 24 – Statistical study with Cluster data

The ion transport in the Earth’s magnetosphere has been studied for several decades. However, the global picture how and where the ions from the different magnetospheric regions are transported, as well as if O+ and H+ ions follow similar path, and if not, why and how, is not fully understood. We try to address these questions, using Cluster spacecraft 4 and in particular, the CODIF instrument that has been recording ion measurements for more than 20 years.

During the seminar, Audrey Schillings will present our new study, where we divided our 20 years data set in magnetospheric regions defined by the plasma beta (high, medium, low). For the different magnetospheric regions, we investigated the influence of the solar cycle phases (maximum and minimum) on the ion transport. The solar minimum and maximum exhibits interesting results for O+ and H+ depending on the regions of observations (plasma mantle/lobes, tail and plasma sheet). Our observations demonstrate the complexity of the ion transport in the magnetosphere and the interesting flow paths depending on the solar cycle phases using a large data set.

Interested to know more about the O+ and H+ flow paths in the Earth’s magnetosphere? You’re welcome to the seminar.
