CMEs hitting Earth

Since November 11, 4 beautiful halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were seen in SOHO/LASCO C3 imagery. Two of them were directed directly to the Earth. The other two were backsided and will therefore have no effect on us.

In the LASCO C3 movie above, four major CMEs can be identified:

  • full halo CME, backsided, coming from old 10486 NOAA region, visible in C3 on November 11 at 02:42UT
  • full halo CME associated with the M1.6 flare, visible in C3 on November 11 at 15:18UT, shock arrived on November 13, 10:00UT
  • full halo CME, backsided, coming from old 10488 NOAA region, visible in C3 on November 12 at 11:18UT
  • partial halo CME associated with an eruptive prominence producing the M1.4 flare, visible in C3 on November 13 at 10:20UT, shock will arrive on November 15
