Topical Discussion Meeting - Metrics, verification and validation for space weather applications
Alexi Glover (ESA); Matthew Angling (University of Birmingham), Mark Dierckxsens (BIRA-IASB), Suzy Bingham (Met Office, UK)
Monday 27/11, 17:15 - 18:30, Mercator
Evaluation of models, forecasts and systems is essential in providing end-users with a reliable service. Strengths and potential limitations of models and forecast processes must be understood to improve services. It’s also important to understand the assumptions and algorithms on which models are based, and to assess the reliability of the associated infrastructure. Over recent years, there has been growing momentum within this area. This meeting will review current activities and initiatives, ongoing in Europe and internationally. We hope to promote discussion on validation and verification needs for the current generation of activities under development and in planning. Efforts targeting standardisation within European and International frameworks will be discussed. The goal of the meeting will be to promote further vital development within this area.
